Before getting into any details, let me put in perspective of what this hefty, IT enabled services jargon actually means. It is nothing but services and business process carried out at a different geographical location other than where the actual market or demand for such services exists, not just for the heck of it, but because it makes prefect business sense.
As most economic commentators and business analyst would agree that getting the work done or providing a service at the most cost effective place and selling this service to the market which pays most for such services, would be the ideal way of doing business and maximizing profit for any business enterprise. Now when we compare this above formula with the current IT industry in India we see a direct correlation in terms of the business model and strategy, which in itself possesses the required intrinsic strength in terms of the business fundamentals and strategy empowering the whole Industry to leap frog into an entrepreneurial dimension, where the boundary is limited only by the vision catering to such a business model.
There is no doubt that this dimension has come into existence by the evolution of Internet and bandwidth rich telecommunications network which form the engine of this new business dimension. My emphasis of this being a dimension and not merely a single new business if buoyed by the fact that it emboldens a plethora of business which have surfaced and will continue to, based on fundamentally strong business visions.
India-a vibrant democracy, which had missed the industrial revolution, seems to be in an excellent position, speeding fast to cash in on the digital revolution, given its intrinsic strength, which happens to be strong analytical and engineering skills which are the much needed raw material, if you will, for this revolution. IT enabled services is a big slice of this revolution where immense work is underway. According to NASSCOM the IT enabled services have garnered around $1B for FY01 and employs close to 70,000 people. The type of services provided in this segment range from Call centre, customer service, data entry, financial accounting, content development, engineering design, GIS, market research, consultancy and management. Thus IT enabled services keeps opening new frontiers and there is lot of value in this model to be cashed in on.
India has thus embarked itself on a very ambitious mission and set for itself lofty targets in this new dimension inclusive of IT enabled services, which if reached could well propel it to being the most admired economy of the current century.
